Expensive Fabulous Eating and Cantaloupe Melons

Sometime ago, I read somewhere (ok, I’ve no citations, but you’ve just gotta trust me, I really did) that when the budget shrinks, one the first things people tend on scrimp on is the food allowance. Smokers will still buy their cigarettes, women will still buy their lipgloss, but when it comes to buying fresh fish and fruits, or a good bottle of wine, people suddenly get reminded that they’re cost-cutting. Those ‘people’ include me.

But if we really think about it, this cost-cutting step is pretty short-sighted. Should we spend less on food and lose out on good nutrition? Or should we rather think of good food as a kind of investment? If we eat healthy nutritious food now (which may come at a price), we’d later spend less days on the sick bed, spend less on medical expenses, and we’d be fit to work and earn more. Makes sense, doesn’t it? In the long run, it’s actually a cheap and enjoyable means to stay healthy.

California Jumbo Cantaloupes, 1 EachSo go ahead, Fatand40, get that $3 cantaloupe. It’s a rich source of Vitamin A and beta carotene (may prevent eye diseases such as cataracts) as well as Vitamin C (good for the immune system), which together, protects you against damage due to oxygen free radicals. It’s also rich in potassium and a good source of vitamin B6, dietary fiber, folate, and niacin (vitamin B3). If you want to know what other goodies are packed in cantaloupe, see this list from the FruitPages.

There are dried cantaloupe slices, which make for a great snack, but personally, I’d rather have a sweet, juice-dripping-as-you-bite slice of fresh melons, cantaloupe or otherwise!

I must say that you get a lot from a $3.00 cantelope too. I wish I bought more fresh pineapple, but I must admit that the price (I think it’s either $4.50) usually makes me think twice.
