Fall 2009 Fashion Trends to Sew

Every year, the fashion industry creates thousands of different pieces of clothing for the two big collections.  It can be a little overwhelming to sort through and decide what you can create for yourself… and what fashion should be left on the runway!

I’ve pulled a few different trends together – along with patterns designed for home sewing as a basic guide to some of Fall 2009/Winter 2010 trends .

Soft, draped clothing is still popular, and is a great option for a more figure-forgiving wardrobe option.

This dress pattern from McCalls can belted, left to hang straight, worn with bare legs or leggings for an added level of warmth.

Dressing as an investment, instead of short-term trends is also showing up as well.

Why not consider making yourself a classic suit, out of good-quality fabric?  Make something timeless,  and you can wear it for years.  The suit pattern is from Vogue.

Strong shoulders are back in style again – but don’t confuse them with those 80s style shoulder pad horrors!  Defined shoulders – not heavily padded are the way to go.

Jacket pattern # 3628 from Simplicity offers several different styles in one envelope.

Vest are a great way to layer on some style, and this pattern from McCalls gives you three different lengths to work with:

Summer fashion tends to be light, flowy and have less structure.  Fall however lends itself to a little bit more tailoring and heavier fabrics.  A simple, knee-length skirt is a great fashion choice and is one of the most flattering lengths for women.  Pair it with opague tights if you’d like a little more coverage.

Pattern #2564 from Simplicity’s Threads Magazine collection has clean lines and as an added bonus – three simple blouse patterns!
