Fancy Nancy: Bonjour, Butterfly!

Jane O’Connor already has two Fancy Nancy books on the New York Times best seller list. My guess is that she’s about to make it three.

Bonjour, Butterfly is a delightful addition to the Fancy Nancy family of books. In fact, I dare say that my daughters have enjoyed it more than the other two. Even my son – at 20 months – claims it as a favorite.

Why?

For one, the illustrations are exquisite (that’s a fancy word for beautiful). In particular, the last few pages at the butterfly zoo are breathtaking. My oldest daughter wouldn’t let me turn the page while she took it all in. Glasser’s illustrations, while always delightful, are far better in this installment of the series than the prior books. Trust me on this.

O’Connor’s story isn’t as fun as the prior two – my daughter still doesn’t get why Fancy Nancy can’t go to Bree’s party even after the story is over. The language in the book, however, is just wonderful. Both daughters have been practicing words like exquisite, exceptional and extraordinary for days.

Fancy Nancy books are never cheap and this one is no exception. It’s priced at $16.99 but worth it for the illustrations alone (plus, as a bonus, there’s glitter on the cover – if you have a daughter, you’ll understand).
