Farewell, Mr. Wizard

Mr. Wizard’s WorldDon Herbert, better known to most as Mr. Wizard passed away yesterday at the age of 89.

Mr. Wizard was one of those guys who bridged the generation gap in geekdom. I was a big Nickelodeon fan as a kid, and “Mr. Wizard’s World” was one of my favorites… that and “You Can’t Do That on Television,” cuz slime is cool. I can still picture him filling the on-set kitchen with smoke from dried ice.

But even cooler was how excited my dad got when he saw the show. He was a fan of the original “Watch Mr. Wizard” back in the 50’s and 60’s. And being a fellow Minnesotan – Mr. Wizard was born in Waconia – there was an extra reason to root for him. I’ll have to ask my dad if he was a member of a Mr. Wizard Science Club.

Rest easy, Mr. Wizard; and thanks for indulging our curiosity.
