Farm-to-school bill to bolster ‘greener’ school lunches

If changes in this federal farm bill passes, we might begin to see school children getting more farm-fresh, locally grown food at the school cafeteria.
The farm-to-school bill to be proposed next week in Washington State by Rep. Eric Pettigrew, D-Seattle, will allow local schools the discretion to choose locally-grown foods without going through the bureaucracy of bidding for the cheapest food.
The struggle to passing the bill? Funding, both on grants for schools with low-income students, research for local farmers’ marketing strategies, and increasing school lunch budgets.
But if the bill passes, then this really is major step to getting kids to eat healthier food choices in school.
