Fashion Conscious Tweens

TEE SHIRT TUNIC

Gone are the days where I can shop for my girls without them being with me! Apart from the fact that their choice in brands is different from mine, they have such different styles, I just can’t pick out the right things with out them being with me.

Right now my girls love Limited Too and its’ sister brand, Justice – Just for Girls. The monkeys, sports graphic tees, fun prints, and trendy look has them by the purse strings. I have been trying to teach them that brand isn’t everything and how to save money by buying basics at Target or Kohls and getting 2 or 3 good pieces from the more expensive stores.

I know that before long they will “graduate” to wanting Aeropostale, Hollister and other brands – after all, it seems like yesterday, I was holding out for a good sale at Gymboree! Where is your kids’ first choice for clothes shopping these days?

Are you a bargain shopper or a trend setter? Can you still shop for your kids or are those days over?

I refuse to pay the prices at Abercrombie and Aeropostale, and my 14-year-old knows not to even ask (most of the time). Kohl’s is her favorite place to get clothes. Sometimes I get lucky and pick out something that she likes, but she does most of the shopping now.

My girl (18) shops with friends now and is a good sale hunter. Cheapo me taught her that. We also have a very cool teen consignment store and she loves to spend $20 and get 3-4 items. She likes to alter things and trade with friends too.
I was pleased to see no one shops at Abercrombie. They have been documented in the press and on various blogs to carry clothes for tweens that have sexual sayings on them. As long as you shop WITH your girl you have to educate them and refuse to allow these items that label your daughter as cheap and stupid.

I shop for my picky son (12) at Hollister and Gap. I go without him and only shop the sale racks.(though I do occasionally have to return something) I spend under 10 dollars for most items and buy bigger sizes in the off season. I have to say that I am much happier with the quality of those stores than Target and Kohls. I am totally bummed by the selection of “trashy” clothes for my eight year old daughter. Someone must be buying that stuff or they wouldn’t sell it.
I am just hoping there is a turn of style in the next four years or I am sure I will be preparing my self for battle when it comes to clothes.
