Fast Omochi

This is the fastest way that I know to cook and eat Omochi, but not one that I am particularly proud of.  If you tell any of my Japanese friends that I cook and eat it this way, I will probably deny it.  But here it is, in all its short cut glory.

Take a couple of rock hard, long life omochi blocks from your Japanese supermarket.  Place them in a microwave safe plate and dollop a spoonful of your favourite jam on top ( I went for strawberry).  One and a half minutes on high in your microwave and it all comes to life.  The omochi softens and goes all sticky and the jam melts and makes a rough kind of sauce.  Wait a couple of minutes or you will burn your tongue, but then get into it.  If you let it go cold you will, once more, end up with an inedible block.  So eat it while its hot.  But don’t tell your Japanese friends.

wow, that’s a very interesting way of eating omochi. Try putting a tea spoon of butter and a table spoon of soysauce on a piece of mochi and cook for about 30 sec. in a microwave. That’s how I eat.
