Favorite Colors for Kids

Do any of your children select colors for their clothes that simply give you the willies?  Do you select colors for them they simply hate and refuse to wear?

That’s because all of us have certain colors that look well on us, due to our skin tones, hair color, eye color and combination of these.  Generally we instinctively go for the colors that look well on us, but we often don’t understand why.

For instance, my granddaughter has always selected colors with warm undertones, such as lime green, apricot, aqua, cream and orange.  They look lovely on her.  However, my daughter and I, while we like the colors for our quiltmaking, don’t select them for our clothing.  If we try to wear them, we don’t look our best.

I had never understood why I didn’t like to wear green even though it was my mom’s favorite color.  She chose it for my clothes, until I made my own choices.  However, after taking classes in color and color analysis, I understood that the greens Mother selected were not ones that looked good on me.

When selecting colors for your children to wear, or making comments about their choices, make sure you aren’t deciding upon something that looks lovely on you, but not on them or vice versa.

Cedar was totally obsessed with yellow as a baby then he got way into orange. I always liked colors like brown and green or natural, so the bright colors he liked were a little shocking. Just now at eight he’s starting to like more subdued colors.

Thank you, Jennifer, for stopping by and giving your input. It’s interesting the colors our children select. We may not pay much attention until they’re colors that aren’t our favorite and we wonder how they can like those. When we realize there are reasons adults and children favor specific colors, it gives us better understanding and acceptance of their and our choices. Also, with young children, bright colors may catch their attention better than more subdued ones.
