The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the sale of inhalable insulin called Exubera. It has also been approved by the European commission. Exubera is the powder form of insulin and is inhaled through mouth. It will be used in the treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It will be a big relief to millions of diabetics who need not depend on needles anymore. The drug has been tested on over 2,500 humans. It wont be a cure to every diabetic though, some may still need to use needles. Also, you cannot use it if you are a smoker or if you have asthma. Exubera could well be the drug of the year (it is expected to hit the US market in a few months). It has been developed by Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventi and Nektar Therapeutics. We had earlier reported on Exubera here and here.
