The Food and Drug Administration will review Merck’s plan to market their drug Januvia and the older, generic drug metformin as a combination that together may decrease blood sugar levels in diabetics. A ruling is expected by October.

Merck is developing a combination of the two drugs in a single pill that it plans to sell as Janumet.

In a study conducted by Merck, two thirds of patients who took the combination saw blood sugar levels fall to acceptable levels, compared with 38 percent who took metformin alone.
