“We lost about three weeks. That’s one of Africa’s problems: We don’t have the facilities. So while we were waiting, we don’t know what was happening with the virus.” Those were the words of Boubar Seck, the West Africa bird-flu coordinator for the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization, who now fears that containment of avian influenza might be impossible.
