Ferriprox Prevents Heart Failure in Patients with Thalassaemia

People with thalassemia have excess iron in their blood which is usually treated with blood transfusions and subcutaneous infusions of Desferal (deferoxamine). A new study finds that oral iron-chelator Ferriprox (deferiprone) may be more effective. Excessive iron can lead to a build up in organs and endocrine glands as well as heart complications and death from heart failure.
