Finding a practitioner of complementary or alternative medicine

If you’ve decided that you want to look into treatments that go beyond what Western medicine can offer, there are many options for you. The trick is, how to find a reliable and safe practitioner if they’re not in a licensed profession.

As odd as it may sound, the first person you can ask regarding a CAM (complimentary or alternative medicine) practitioner is your own doctor. He or she may be able to refer you to people that they know are reliable and safe.

Failing that option, you can check to see if your province or state offers registration or licensing. In Quebec, for example, acupuncturists are licensed now.

For more information, the National Institutes of Health has put together a document for the public to help them find a CAM professional, called Selecting a CAM practitioner.
