I’m not a fan of Black Friday. I don’t enjoy the crowds and I’ve only taken part when visiting with my sister.
To give my readers a bit of a Black Friday break, I’m going to hold a giveaway. I want to give away a fine art photograph.
I have a photography business - Chase Your Bliss Photography - and I recently set up an Etsy shop. The prize will be the winner’s choice of a photograph from the shop.
Please leave me a comment sharing a holiday shopping memory – good or bad – and I will chose a winner, by random drawing, on Black Friday.
Thanks and good luck!

One year, my family decided to go shopping early, early Black Friday. Much to my chagrin, they insisted on dragging me along. My brother also was opposed to the idea and disconnected the battery of our car, so when we got in the car to leave, the car wouldn’t start! We got out of the Black Friday madness that time, but unfortunately further madness ensued after our parents found out what we did!
Oh, my goodness, Lisa. The battery?!
My sister-in-law used to go to those dawn sales with her Mom. I picture crowds shoving each other. Scary! But I think that they really enjoy the sales.
A few years ago, I went the mall early in the morning on Boxing Day. I found a parking space somewhat early, had a successful run around and got some great stuff on sale. However, I returned to my car to find out it was completely barricaded in the parking lot by some frantic shoppers who apparently didn’t have the patience to wait for a spot of their own. I missed Christmas brunch with my family while waiting 2 hours for that person to come back!
We too avoid the Black Friday madness — especially after my husband and I learned the hard way. We thought it would be fun to stop at a bookstore on our way back to our town that Friday. Sitting forever in parking lots, in lines of traffic that barely moved, we realized how insane it is to go anywhere near shopping centers. Now we spend the day with friends, cooking our own food, and save the bookstore trips for another day.
jaklyn, that sounds frustating. I really dislike rudeness. I’m sorry that you missed that family brunch.
manhattandoula, finding a good book, should be fun and relaxing, not stressful. Eek!
Thanks for commenting.
I LOVE the Black Friday shopping experience! For me, it’s more fun to watch all of the people since there’s never really anything that I want badly enough to run folks over for. So I do get out there when it’s still dark…take my time going from store to store…taking it all in. While everyone around me is hurrying around in a frenzy and I just stroll around it all. It’s like those commercials where the one person is moving in slow motion and everyone else is a blur.
Leah, I can absolutely see you staying calm, enjoying the frenzy around you.
I really like the photo Sunlit Lily of the Nile-gorgeous! My worst shopping experience had to be going to our largest mall on Boxing Day-wall to wall people pushing and shoving to get to the bargains! Never again!
Elaine, thank you very much.
I am glad that you like it.
Crowds – I am not a fan of them.
thanks for this giveaway!
one memory was a few thanksgiving’s ago when my husband’s turkey fryer thermometer broke. we had 15 people in our house and the turkey wouldnt cook correctly. we had to order buffalo wings for the main course!!! terrible.
My first black friday shopping experience was when my children were of the age when all they wanted was a Furby and they were very hard to come by. A big box retailer advertised that they had several available when their doors opened at 5 a.m. Having never paid attention to black friday, I figured I would be the only one there at such an early hour. I soon learned otherwise and left without a Furby.
I hate crowded stores and sales which pack the store and make people crazy. Two years ago, a friend talked me into going to a Black Friday sale. There were so many people rushing around trying to get $20.00 off electronics. It was a madhouse and the children crying just added to the craziness.
I love the photograph, Rain Puddles. It’s beautiful and so different!
Are you on twitter? I am twitter.com/queenoftheclick
My favorite black Friday memory has to be of my mom yelling at this old lady because the old lady shoved her. My mom is not one to yell at strangers, but she doesn’t like being shoved. It was hilarious.
Linda, I so remember the Furby thing. Ugh.
Queen of the Click, I will go look for you at Twitter. Thanks for the comment on Puddles. I kind of like, too. Do you like those photos of the reflection of clouds on a skyscraper window? That’s my version of that.
Jessica, it’s one of those yell-making kind of days.
I’ve never actually been able to get myself to a bright and early Black Friday. A couple years ago Target had wake up call alarms. I set one for myself, heard it, ignored it and went back to sleep. Yay for giveaways!
I usually try to avoid black friday. However, one year my parents decided to get me a laptop for my birthday. So, we went shopping on Black Friday. Let’s just say I don’t like spending 15 minutes trying to get out of one parking lot.
what a cool and nice idea
I have NEVER shopped on Black Friday – I
last year I was working my PT retail job. I got to work at 5AM and there were already lines. I went to the employees entrance and had to kind of push my way through to the front waving my badge.
I made sure to say hello to everyone and tell them how fabulous they looked so early in the morning and just basically diffuse tension – I did that all day.
there were many crazy moments but I must say that if you approach people with humor it goes a long way.
My husband and I usually head out to my parents’ house for Thanksgiving, but one year we decided to stay home. I’m not big on cookin’ a whole bird so I got the turkey breast and planned on cooking it in the crock pot. Well, I guess I thawed it out one too many days and when we opened it up…P.U!!! We couldn’t go near it. So now what? All of the stores were closed…except for Walgreens. We ended up having Banquet frozen fried chicken for Thanksgiving that year. At least it was a bird.
Black Friday… well, we don’t have it up here in Toronto, but I’m going to go for it anyway as on Thursday I have Root Canal… twice. So, Black Friday or not lol… I’m going for it!
I can’t even remember any holiday shopping memories LOL. Part of that is because for as long as I can remember, I’ve ordered everything online at Amazon. I also hate going to the stores on Black Friday….though am considering it this year for a great deal on a bike for my 8yo. Truthfully, I’d rather avoid the crowds and pay a little more LOL. Bad, I know.
I was out shopping for Christmas one year with my stepmother when my best friend called me to tell me that her mom had just been found dead of a heart attack. It certainly was a shock. We rushed out of the mall to go over and spend time with her.
I did the really early, really cold wait last year while my daughter tried to snag a laptop. It was so miserable. I sat in the heated car for 2 hours, and kept taking blankets out to her, as the wind chill was in the single digits. She was 4th in line, but did not get one, as the lady in front of her took two tickets. I gladly bought her a much nicer laptop after Christmas. This year, we are staying away from all stores!!
I experienced one Black Friday out in the cold cruel world and decided it was worth my sanity just to stay home. If I do any shopping, it’s online.
Wow, what a great and beautiful idea!
I love the holidays mostly because I get to be with family. My husband and I are the only two of our family that do not live in town so we cherish when we are with them. Like yourself, I am not one for Black Friday…I would prefer to sip tea by the fire. My Mom and sister; however, are big fans so they wake early and hit the stores every year….and I tag along…not really to shop, sometimes I do not get anything at all, but rather, to just be with them.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Hilday shopping is always hectic, and i always find myself exerting too much physical effort. i often find myself holding on to a shoe which i really really like, only to find out that i have to find the other shoe in order to buy it.
total bummer =(
My fondest memory is yearly shopping with my Great Aunt and afterwards she would take me out for a special meal, just the two of us. Being part of a big family, it always made me feel special.
Not a lot of shopping accomplished on this trip, but I’m fond of the time last year my friends and I took advantage of Macy’s being open 24 hours and went over at 2 AM, in fancy clothing (we had come from a party) and just roamed the aisles in the holiday spirit!
I like shopping so I usually do go out on Black Friday, but this year I think I am staying in. One of my favorite black friday memories was when my sister, mom, and I spent all day shopping til we dropped. We didn’t really drop but it was so much fun spending the entire day with the girls!
