I don’t want to start a big debate, but after reading the autism article the scientist in me has to say – they found that in one case, a child was harmed by the vaccine. And reading it over, what it seems to me is brain damage caused by an unusually severe reaction to a vaccine. This does not mean “all vaccines cause autism”. If parents have concerns and want to space vaccines out, that is reasonable. But I personally feel I child dead from a preventable disease is a risk I would not want to take, and the autism/vaccine connection is by no means proven by this one case. I respect parents’ rights to question doctors and get their questions answered, but I respectively disagree with the conclusions drawn by that particular article.

B- debating is JUST fine here. I also write at Discussing Autism (http://www.discussingautism.com) so I have done a TON of research on vaccines.

My son also has trouble with vaccines but I think that kids do need some of them. I don’t give him ones like the flu shot because I don’t think he needs that one but MMR I will give him (and space it out).

There is something called a methylation protein that some kids don’t have (mine included) and it does not allow for their bodies to get rid of toxins so we have to help them chelate. We do this with AJ (and I will write more about this because it pertains to his adoption).

See, you sound like a perfectly well informed rational person! Unlike some of the people responding to the article in question, to whom any suggestion that “You know, polio and measles were a bad thing…” turns into a rant about “The Government is forcing me to poison my children!!!!”

I do get the flu shot for my kids, as my 7 year old has asthma, and the flu is extremely nasty to him. But I did that after careful research and discussion with my doctor, as all parent should.

  4. Marcie says:

Rational? Not so sure about that on an average day but I do do my research on those things…every little thing affects AJ so I have to watch everything that he touches and eats.

  5. BMS says:

Well as rational as anyone can be with little kids in the house. Me, I jump every time son #1 coughs, since he has asthma issues. But I also figure, he survived 6 months in a third world country, he’ll probably survive my parenting too.
