Food Friday – Breakfasts

Breakfast with your familyIn our home, breakfast depends on the day. During the week, when it’s a school day, breakfast is quick. My daughter is slow to get going and she’s also not fond of eating right when she gets up, so she has a http://www.easy-kids-recipes.com/kid-breakfast-recipes.html. Because I believe breakfast is extremely important, I used to freak out a bit (not AT her, but in my own head) about her lack of interest, but I came to realize it’s just the way she is – on weekends, she’s usually up for about a half hour or an hour before she wants anything. Also, they get a morning snack at 9 am so it’s not so bad.

Most days she’ll have a bowl of cereal with milk or a piece of toast with peanut butter. If I’ve made muffins, that’s a good choice too. Meanwhile, my youngest *usually* sleeps in a bit longer so she doesn’t eat right away. Once my oldest is dropped off at school and we’re back home, my little one will ask for “peanut butter bread” which is actually toast because heaven forbid you don’t toast the bread first!

As for myself, I eat a bagel, some toast, or maybe some cereal. And coffee, of course, but that practically goes without saying.

My husband will usually skip breakfast if he has to work that day, much to my horror, but on days he’s off (he works by contract so sometimes he’s home during the week too), he’ll usually sleep in a bit and then make himself an omelet or skip the whole breakfast food thing altogether and have leftovers for brunch.

On the weekends, we usually have one day where we all fend for ourselves (well sort of. The kids don’t fend much!) but on one of the days, my husband will often cook breakfast for all of us. He’ll fry up bacon, some of it lightly fried, and some of it just about burned to a crisp (that’s mine, yum), then make some fried eggs, and a heaping plate of toast. We all sit at the table together and eat our breakfast/brunch, the adults have a coffee and the kids pretend their hot chocolate is coffee too, and it’s so nice to have a real family breakfast in comparison to the more hurried nature of weekdays.

How’s breakfast at your house?

For inspiration, here is a list of breakfast recipe ideas – I’m drooling over the “Breakfast Mess” because that sounds delicious!

cereal for the kids or fruit. hubby has an apple every day for his entire life. I have peanut butter toast or oatmeal and a cup of coffee. We don’t really eat together for this meal.
