Free Style Lite Glucometer By Abbott Available In May 2007

A new glucometer is on the horizon. The FreeStyle Lite blood glucose monitoring system will be available in the United States beginning in May 2007.
The new FreeStyle Lite system has an innovative automatic calibration feature that eliminates the manual coding step usually required by most blood glucose meters before starting a new vial of test strips. The easy-to-use FreeStyle Lite meter allows people with diabetes to test quickly and more easily.
In a nut shell, this will allow for a smaller blood sample size.
Similar to other meters in Abbott’s FreeStyle® line, the FreeStyle Lite system allows people with diabetes to test on alternate parts of the body such as the forearm, thigh and palm, instead of having to use sensitive finger tips.
I have found that the forearm and thigh area is inaccurate. I always seem to test lower there than my fingertips. Others have shared the same concerns.
We will see if the new FreeStyle Lite offers a more accurate blood sugar in alternate places.

It seems from all the people I’ve talked to that have tried alternative site testing that it “never” gives the same result as a finger-test. There are some sources that say that alternate site testing will give a “delayed” reading which could be a critical problem for someone using their testing to adjust their insulin dose or check for hypoglycemia.
The only reason that alternate site testing is even considered is to relieve the number of sticks on fingers which can be a lot, depending on a person’s testing regimen.
I stuck my fingers a minimum of 11 times a day for 7+ years & never had a finger problem. I used one finger a day, stuck on both sides of the first joint & then on to the next finger “tomorrow”. This gives plenty of time for fingers to heal before coming back to the same one.
Also, I recommend not testing on the pad of the fingers because that’s where the most nerves are & if there’s going to be pain it will be far worse there than on the sides.
Adjustable lancing devices can make testing virtually painless, so if a person doesn’t have one (or does the stick manually), it would improve things greatly to use one of those. They are pretty inexpensive.
I agree totally Roger. 3 years ago I was an arm tester and I never, and I mean never, had a reading above 125, after I get my self settled in. And then a few months ago, after I had some variations and troubles with my blood sugars, I started testing on my fingertips, since that is what I teach my patients. Why didn’t I do that since I knew it was the proper way to test in the first place? I have no good answer, but my readings were very different, like 20 points higher on average. I have stuck with my fingertips and have found that when my reading is 98 there, my forearm will say 78. That is a big difference!
