Yesterday on the Sproul Plaza at the Berkeley campus of the Universtity of California, student members of CalPRIG (California Public Interest Research Group) took part in an event to raise awareness of renewable energy sources and environmental policies on campus and beyond by giving away free smoothies made with solar-powered blenders.
The event was held in response to the recent failure of a solar-power friendly bill in the California State Assembly. The legislation, known as the Million Solar Roofs Bill, was intended to lower the costs for solar power by providing $250 million in rebate funds to households and businesses for solar panel installs as well as having the goal of achieving one million solar roofs in the state by 2018.
In addition to the smoothies, the group was also giving away mini pizza bagels cooked in a handmade pizza oven constructed out of a cardboard box and tinfoil.
Here’s the link to an article at the Daily Californian describing the event and here’s a link to CalPRIG’s web site.
Ummm…sun smoothies!
