Friday: Season 6 Premiere of Dog Whisperer

Dog Whisperer fans, get ready. Season 6 premieres this Friday, October 9 on the National Geographic Channel at 9 pm ET/PT. In this first episode of the new season, behavior specialist Cesar Millan takes viewers on a fun journey with four new pups who live with him and the pack for their first eight months. Yet, one of these dogs will stay with Cesar as a successor to Daddy, the trusted and aging pit bull nearing retirement.

The premiere, titled “How to Raise the Perfect Dog,” will show you how to train and care for pups to avoid unpleasant issues from the very beginning. New pack members include Junior, a pit bull; Marley, a Labrador retriever; Angel, a miniature schnauzer; and Mr. President, the English bulldog. You’ll see Cesar handpick these dogs from among others for their medium-level energy and more relaxed behavior.

“How to Raise the Perfect Dog” is the first of 30 new episodes this season with filming locations including Australia and Texas. The season premiere is also a documentary companion show to Cesar’s new book, How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond. Check back for a book review in the coming weeks.

I watched the season premiere early, thanks to National Geographic Channel. I learned a lot about how to prevent overexcitement and feeding aggression, as well as toning down unwanted breed behaviors. I also learned about proper reactions to potty accidents during puppyhood. In addition, Cesar covers exercise and the importance of avoiding aggression and other unwanted behaviors down the road by neutering before sexual maturity at 8 months.

It was endearing to watch the puppies grow up to be good family dogs who find wonderful homes. Moments with Mr. President are particularly humorous. Daddy, a favorite of regular viewers, is almost always around to help show the way for the puppies. Even if you’ve never watched the show before, the season premiere won’t leave you confused.
