Fun with Tofurky
More exploration of fake meats today. I had never had a Tofurky product before, so I picked one up – a peppered sliced fake deli meat.
I was a little apprehensive, but the thin slices were peppery and pretty good – definitely an improvement over other vegetarian ‘deli meats’ that I’d tried in the past. And my omnivore father, after making fun of the whole concept for about 10 minutes, ended up happily eating about half the package.
I’m not really looking to add more processed foods to my diet, so even if I could I wouldn’t make Tofurky products a regular part of my diet, but I wouldn’t mind an occasional sandwich made out of this stuff.

My favourite non-meat meat is a style of Chinese cooking for Budists who follow their beliefs closely enough to avoid meat, yet still love meat. So they’ve developed this fantastic vegetarian cooking style that is so good, that even a carnivore would enjoy it and feel satisfied after eating it. The best example of this is a hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Penang, Malaysia. Home-cooked every day. Wish I could give you directions, but I’d only know how to find it if I was still there and tried walking there
I used to buy “fake meat” up to a few months ago until I read the ingredients properly and noticed some modified this and modified that. The company claims that the mycoprotein isn’t genetically modified. I’d better be safe than sorry and haven’t bought any since. I’m not saying I won’t buy it again but probably only now and then.
The downside of most fake meats for me is that they are processed and have long ingredient lists of not-so-appealing stuff. They are fun to try every once in a while, but I agree that I don’t want to base my diet on them!
