Gaining Weight and Don’t Know Why? 7 Things It Could Be

Fluctuating a few pounds from week to week or even day to day is normal. Water is heavy, and your level of hydration will make an impact on the scale. So will the time of day you weigh yourself and how recently you’ve had a bowel movement. That being said, there are some times that your weight may change more than 5 to 10 pounds at a time, and then it would be a good idea to talk to your doctor to figure out why.

Here are seven common explanations for unexpected weight gain in women:

  1. You’ve changed your diet without realizing it. I know when I started commuting to my “real” job after college, my diet changed dramatically. Instead of picking from a giant spread of healthy options at the dining hall, I was feasting on fatty muffins in the morning and fast food in the evening because it was easy and I was tired. (And no, the unhealthy food did nothing to increase my energy level.)
  2. You’re drinking a lot of calories. Unless you’re liquid intake consists solely of water, you’re consuming a lot more calories than you realize in the form of the beverages you drink. Fruit juice is good for you, but it’s full of [natural] sugar, which means calories. Don’t get me started on soda. And even if you drink coffee with no cream, you add calories when you put in sugar.
  3. Your metabolism is slowing down. It happens to all of us — it’s why you can’t wear your jeans from high school anymore. Metabolic slowing is common in the twenties, but it can happen at any life stage, and we do slow gradually from childhood on.
  4. You’re eating more than you have in the past. Especially if you tend to eat on the go or eat in front of the TV, you may be consuming way more food than you realize, or more than you mean to. Conscious eating, which means that you’re aware of what goes into your body at all times, is key to making sure you’re not accidentally overeating.
  5. You need to kick up your exercise routine. The body does become conditioned to certain activities, so if you’re big on pilates, take a spin class twice a week for a month and then go back to your old standby. Trade workouts with a friend to mix things up. Borrow an aerobic dance DVD from the library and give it a go.
  6. You’re pregnant. If you suddenly put on like 10 pounds in a month with no other explanation (and you’re sexually active), take a pregnancy test. Hey, you never know. This is one of the big reasons you need to see your doctor if you’ve gained weight unexpectedly.
  7. You’ve developed a chemical imbalance like a thyroid condition or hormonal issues. If this is the case, changing your diet or your exercise routine most likely will not be enough to solve the problem. This is another big reason you need to see your doctor if you’ve had unexplained weigh gain of more than a few pounds. These conditions can develop at any age, so better safe than sorry.

Remember, it is possible to be physically fit and overweight or underweight as well as at so-called healthy weight. You know what’s normal for you, so if the status quo changes dramatically, make an appointment with your primary care physician and get it worked out ASAP.

Have you started gaining weight with no obvious explanation? Did you have an unexplained weight loss that your doctor diagnosed — or one that you still can’t figure out? Leave a comment and tell your story!

  1. You really should be vigilant when it comes to issues about your health whether you are on the move for weight loss or merely to maintain a good well-being.

I agree that it is indeed a must to consult your doctor whenever you find something unusual about yourself. Remember, “Prevention is better than cure.” It’s not always that our hunches can be relied upon so you better submit yourself to prior checkups especially if you’re struggling with losing weight and it just seems to go nowhere. The reasons presented are actually factual and other factors such as approaching menopause, stress (most especially if you’re insulin resistant – your body converts every calorie it can into fat), age, gender, genetics and development of any disease can also contribute to unexplainable weight gain.

I have had a 10-15 pound weight gain in a matter of a couple weeks. I literally went from 128 to 134 pounds in 2 days. Whats going on? I eat the same all the time. I literally eat fruit loops, 100 calorie swiss rolls and other things that we buy all the time in my house. I need a change in my diet of healthier and smaller portions. I also need a good exercise routine for working out different body parts alternating days. Im scared of this weight gain I fear it will grow rapidly out of control! I feel powerless over it. I weigh 134 pounds and I am 5′6″ But I should weight arounds 125. Im a model and I cant allow this to hjappen. I was bulemic for 3 years and I hope my mind doesnt resort to that again. I was a drug user for 4 years and Ive been clean and that lead to a weight gain a while back as well. Im scared this is going to result in something bad. I want my body back.

I have been diagnosed with a thyroid condition. I had heart palps and 50 pound weight gain. It took a couple of years to get my horomones under control and then I had energy to exercise and I lost 40 pounds and was not real thin but ok with my weight as I looked good and was healthy. THen I got pregnant. The doctor told me I don’t have thyroid problem and my TSH went from .16 to 2.59 in 2 months and I was feeling horrible. So what does he do? He took me off of my thyroid medicine and have not been back on. I have gained 80 pounds. I lost 30 after the pregnancy and then gained 36 pound in a year. I just gained another 10 pounds this month and I have been working out in the garden which is good exercise. I have little energy and my joints are in horrible pain.. I don’t know what to do. any advice?

I was on birth control pill for a few years now and decided to get off completely. Since then, I have experienced consistent weight gain, and am now 25 pounds above my ideal weight! I try to watch what I eat and stay as active as I can, but I gained about 20 pounds within the last couple months, and this alarming number seems to be increasing with each passing day. I am not sure if this is directly linked to getting off the pill, or if it is just due to stress, or a slowing metabolism, but I am only 25. Either way, I feel powerless and am really trying to find a way to shed those 25 pounds quickly and keep them off for good.
