To kick off your new year right, I’m going to do a small series this week – a room by room guide to getting organized and decluttered. Of course, a real, in-depth organizational system and deep decluttering takes a lot, but this series should get you started.
Before we get going, I wanted to post some basics tips. These posts linked below are some of the basics we’ve seen here at Declutter It, and they should get you thinking about how you’re going to go about organizing and decluttering your whole house.
- What exactly is clutter?
- One of the first things you should do before organizing your house
- Getting Rid of Dead Space
- You won’t go to Hades for tossing that (fill in the blank) out
- Visualize A Clutter Free Space
- Organize the worst first – yes or no?
Coming up this week, we’ll be looking at the basics of creating a clutter-free and organized kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, dining room, kids space, and more.
Which room are you most interested in getting organized this year?

The Basement, absolutely the basement. Our is awful. It’s an unfinished basement and somehow it’s turned into simply one gigantically unorganized storage space.
But, if that’s too complicated, how about the living room?
Yes, yes, yes! I am cleaning and organizing every inch of my house over the next year. I decided this in November and so happy to come across this post today! I decided I would take a little each month and by the end of the year I would have the whole thing tackled. That’s the plan anyway. Not sure where to begin but after reading the tip above about what to do before starting to declutter I may keep going with my little project of creating a task list for daily/weekly/monthly chores. I have been working on putting it together for a few weeks and think I have finally figured out what all needs to be done each week. And so glad to see I was on the right track! So excited about this.
@Jon E. Ok, no basement having me, will try to have a couple of basement posts. I have helped friends to organize their basements; just don’t currently have one (good they give me the spooks). I have a feeling this series will take longer than a week… hmmm.
@Lee Anne glad you made the decision to declutter – it must be hard with twins, no? You sound like you’re on the right track though. You know, if you need a good checklist type help manual, you should read this post: http://www.declutterit.com/2008/11/13/holiday-gift-guide-organize-now-possibly-the-only-organizing-book-you-need/ – that is the world’s best organizing book. AND it’s full of ready made checklists. Glad you found this blog, and thanks for the comment
I read this blog too much, and I am finally posting for the first time to make my goal to declutter my bedroom, where I study, hangout, get ready in the morning do everything in. We can do this!
