Getting back into a routine

Last year, when my daughter started Kindergarten, it was my first time dealing with a school routine where my role was that of a parent and not a student. It kept me busy, figuring it out but we slipped into it pretty quickly and easily.

I’m finding it harder this year. After a full school year of getting up at 6:30 am and following a basic routine of getting my daughter breakfast, brushing her teeth & washing up, getting dressed, getting her little sister up and dressed, packing the freezer pack into the lunch bag, grabbing the school bag and going… well, let’s just say that my non-morning person self really fell easily into the summer lazing routine.

Ah, summer. The days of not having to jump out of bed courtesy of a blaring alarm clock, eating when we actually felt like it instead of when the clock deems it necessary, and not having to rush out the door by 7:30 am. I’m finding that I’m missing it. I can’t wear pajamas all day long unless I’m sick but I love to get into them ASAP at night and lounge in them for awhile in the morning, but now I have to hop into proper clothing because I have to head out.

It’s only the second week so I know that in time I’ll get back into the school time line again but man, I wouldn’t mind another day to just lie on a blanket on the living room floor with my girls while watching a movie at 9 am!

Is anyone else a bit sluggish on the school morning front?

I too am not a morning person and have a hard time getting up in the morning. The only difference is I homeschool my kids so I don’t have to get up to early. As the bus rolls by in the morning I crack my eyelid and then smile as I drift back off to sleep. At least once a week we have pj day and we wear our pj’s all day and occasionally we my skip a day where we will just watch movies and play games all day (did you know there is a lot of learning going on just playing games together). I truly have sympathy for those that have to do the get up and go to school routine and I do hope your days do get better.

Kelly – once upon a time I would have enjoyed homeschooling but it’s not something that would work for us. I “homeschool” for preschool stuff (yes I do indeed know that playing is a great way to learn). However, where I live there is no homeschooling group and there are none near enough for me to join. I don’t believe actual school is the only way to socialize, but in our case it was a very important factor.

Besides, my daughter loves school tremendously and our school is absolutely fabulous. I don’t mind having her go to school at all, I just have to get back into the routine again, which would be easier if I didn’t go to bed so darn late.
