Getting married for the healthcare benefits

“With this ring, I get thee health insurance.”

Yes, it’s true, that’s a motivator for some people. Apparently 7% of Americans said they or someone in their household decided to marry in the last year so they could get healthcare benefits via their spouse (Source: LA Times).

For the record, I do not condone this! I mean, it’s hard enough to manage the ups and downs of marriage when you love each other. Take love out of the equation and marry for healthcare? I don’t think it’s worth it. But then again, I’m insured.

That being said, when I saw the statements from my insurance company breaking down the cost of my surgeries, I was overwhelmed.

And I do frequently wonder … what on earth do people without health insurance do?
