Getting married for the healthcare benefits

“With this ring, I get thee health insurance.”

Yes, it’s true, that’s a motivator for some people. Apparently 7% of Americans said they or someone in their household decided to marry in the last year so they could get healthcare benefits via their spouse (Source: LA Times).

For the record, I do not condone this! I mean, it’s hard enough to manage the ups and downs of marriage when you love each other. Take love out of the equation and marry for healthcare? I don’t think it’s worth it. But then again, I’m insured.

That being said, when I saw the statements from my insurance company breaking down the cost of my surgeries, I was overwhelmed.

And I do frequently wonder … what on earth do people without health insurance do?

Anyway, here’s some help for you if you are uninsured so you don’t head to the altar with this as your primary motivation:

  • Here’s a pretty good site with some facts on breast cancer and health insurance; you can even request a quote via this site.
  • Here’s another good site with FAQ about health insurance and breast cancer.
  • Here’s one more site dealing specifically with claims for those of you who are insured but are reading this post with interest.

Now it’s your turn to chime in … would you ever get married for the health insurance benefits? Did you get married for the health insurance benefits?
