A personalized wooden jigsaw puzzle is a great idea for a gift. It would provide not only a familiar memory for the person with Alzheimer’s Disease but would also provide an cognitive skills actiivity.
This video shows how it is made…

I’ve done research regarding activities for Alzheimer’s and other memory loss residents. I discovered that many with the disease do not recognize their family members and when this happens it is heartbreaking to the family and a feeling of failure for the resident with the disease.
I developed my puzzles with themes from an era that some can relate to and remember. In many cases the residents feel they are in this era, when they were younger. The themes are the wonderful fun-loving art of Norman Rockwell – The Saturday Evening Post Covers. They are enjoyable for not only the residents, but also the family member helping them.
To go along with these puzzles, I have memory treatment playing cards, that reinforce the images and also a fun game to play with your loved ones. It is an enjoyable experience for all.
Sincerely,

What an interesting idea, Karen, and thanks for sharing. I found my mom relating to pictures in magazines when she wasn’t too aware of anything else. She also would try to sound out some of the words in the magazine as she looked at the pictures.
