Go for Your Dream the Georgia O’Keeffe Way

While watching a documentary about artist Georgia O’Keeffe, as I taught an art class today, I was struck by her determination to find her own way. She mentioned she “took hold of most anything I wanted” and essentially went for it.

I have seen her paintings for years, but never learned much about her life. So the film was interesting in many ways. I learned about Ms. O’Keeffe and discovered philosophy I can apply to my life and my art.
- She wanted to be an artist from the age of 8.
- She tried to follow the art of traditional masters, but was dissatisfied until she found her way.
- The story behind her sketches and paintings of skulls and bones was interesting. That’s the material she found on hand.
- She had different periods with her paintings, depending on where she lived and what was available for subject matter.
- She was patient and waited many years before she could live in New Mexico full time and paint what she truly loved.
- She followed her dream and achieved success.
Can you apply her philosophy to your life and your art? Decide what you want to do and go for it, within the bounds of what is possible at this period of your life. If you can’t accomplish everything now, don’t give up, but continue in your pursuit, as Georgia O’Keeffe did.
