Going to the Dogs (and Cats)

July 31, 2007 by Heather R.

A recent Yahoo article states that 57% of all adults in the US own are owned by a pet of one kind or another. Dog owners (39%) outnumber cat lovers (23%) which surprises me, since I had read a few years ago that the number of cat owners had finally exceeded dog owners. Now that I think about it, though, I think it may have meant that there are more cats as pets, since, to use an old cliche, “cats are like potato chips, it’s hard to have just one.” (I have the fridge magnet.)

Anyway, I was amused by the last line: “rural residents (65%) are more likely than suburbanites (57%) or city folks (51%) to have a pet — though they’re a bit less likely to consider their dogs or cats a member of the family.”
