Gone are the days of Rob and Laura…

Okay, how many of you got the reference? No, I’m not old enough to know it first hand, but I’ve watched my share of Nick at Night (at least, I think that’s where I got my Dick Van Dyke Show education!).

We’re talking about the days of the twin beds in the adult bedrooms (yes, I know I could have used Ricky and Lucy, but that would have been too easy!). I’ve often teased Bald Man that there are times where I can see the advantages of my own bed! Mostly because he’s hot as all get-out (I’m talking purely temperature here for now, folks), and I could stand to not sweat like mad anytime I get within 2 inches of him. Alas, the desire to choose the bedding and such for my own bed that would allow for the perfect sleeping conditions does not outweigh the desire to sleep with my husband. Probably a good thing, aye?
So, that gets me to the whole point of this post, which is to find out which side of the bed you sleep on and why? I sleep on the left. I think we’ve switched that once or twice in our marriage, though the reason for the changes is no longer clear to me. However, let me say that the switch would not, could not have been without good reason. I know that, because you can’t just willy nilly decide to switch sides of the bed on any given night. Sometimes I like to pretend that I’m going to, just to mess with Bald Man. He doesn’t appreciate the joke.
Anyway, I think I sleep on the left because it happens to be the farthest side from the door. I think on the rare occasion that we’re in a hotel, he sleeps closest to the door, whichever side that happens to be. Cuz, you know, an intruder is totally not going to be able to get to me an entire 12 inches past my hubby. No way. But still, that’s the only reason I can come up with for it.
How ’bout you? Is there a reason why you sleep on the side that you do? Are there any of you out there wild and crazy enough to switch it up night-by-night?

When I was married, I slept on the left side of the bed. Left, as in when you are looking at the bed, as opposed to when you are sitting up IN the bed.
On my own, I gravitate towards the side nearest the bathroom.
When I WAS married, the hub slept between me and the door but the one time the dog pitched a fit outside, I was the one who had to go investigate. (Stray rabbit, cornered behind the air conditioner.) It was then I realized he had not chosen that side to protect me from intruders, but to be closest to the bathroom.
I sleep on the side closest to the bedroom door. He sleeps on the side nearest the wall. I did not plan it, but there is a VERY good reason to keep this up. On days when I make bed and I venture over to his side, I always see a whole load of crap on the floor, between the bed and the wall. Clothes he threw off one night, books, note pads, pens, 2 or 3 pairs of pajama pants, etc. If I had to look at his alley of crap every time I walked into the bedroom, I would scream. This way, I can pretend its not there, because I can’t see it.
Sheila: Oooh! I forgot to mention that, and had planned to! The only time, well…times, that I slept closest to the door was when I was pregnant and could only somehow manage to stay away from the bathroom for about 4 minutes at a time! Good point.
Be a good mom: Sounds like my bed growing up! Mom never knew quite how messy my room was until she dared to enter and walk to the other side of the bed.
Bald Man knew what he was getting into, though. Long before we married, he saw that I only slept on half of my bed b/c the other side had all those books and clothes and such that you mentioned piled on top of it! I’m much better about it now, but probably wouldn’t be if it weren’t for Bald Man. In fact, Be a good dad’s pile sounds about exactly like mine would!
my hubby always sleeps nearest the door, no matter where we are, but I like being closest to the bathroom.
I am so glad i found this website!! My Hubby and I recently got into a huge fight over having sides of the bed!! Out of the blue one night, he walks over to my side of the bed (the left side. the side i have slept on for THREE years!! ) and announces that he wants to sleep there tonight! I promptly answered no. Flat out – no. That is my side of the bed. Not your side of the bed. That is my comfort zone. You stay away from my side. Alas, this turned into a 2, count it 2 day fight!! Over where we sleep in our bed! Is my husband insane? Am i insane for not scootching over?? Is it wrong to be territorial over which side of the bed I lay on?? I feel that the bed is nicely contoured to my body and i am not comfortable on his side of the bed. We have since stopped fighting and have agreed to disagree but I still cant explain to him, in terms he will understand, why it is so important to me. Has anyone ever had this same idiotic argument or are we just nuts????
Debbie: The proximity to the bathroom does seem to be a big draw for the women!
Going Insane: ha. Bald Man and I did have this argument one night as well, only I was the one who didn’t see the problem in switching for a night!
He does like his routine and order, though, so I shouldn’t have expected a spur of the minute switch to fly!
