Goodbyes

Tonight I saw my mother off at Perth airport. There were also a lot of other people waiting to say goodbye to their loved ones. All of us delayed the moment where we finally released them to catch their flight until they needed to board their plane. As I watched the other passengers, their family and friends, and chatted with my mum, I thought about all the goodbyes I’ve had in my life.

As much as I didn’t want mum to go home and I hated saying goodbye I knew I’d get a chance to write about the event in my journal. Farewells are a part of life. As I observed people interacting I realised saying goodbye is not always a tough experience. It depends on what you’re letting go.

An idea for a journal prompt might be to make a list of all the goodbyes you’ve hated, but don’t forget to make a list of the goodbyes you’ve loved. Saying goodbye to smoking or to the weight you gained over Christmas should be a joyous occasion. Perhaps list ten of each goodbye, positive and negative. I believe this will help put the goodbye you’re experiencing now into perspective. I still feel sad to see mum go, though, and can’t wait to write about it in my journal. Hope this prompt helps you with your journal writing.
