Green Blogahthon DetailsShea Gunther, the Eco-Entrepreneur, is spearheading a Blogathon for Greenie bloggers like myself which is set to happen Friday and Saturday, February 24th and 25th. I’m going to be joining in on the fun and games and here are the details of my involvement.

Unfortunately, I’m not a spring chicken like the young and robust Mr Gunther, so I’ll only be taking part in a 12-hour shift. Shea will be starting up on the Friday night at 8PM MST (10PM EST) and going through until Saturday night. I’ll be joining the Blogathon on the Saturday morning at 8AM MST (10AM EST) and accompanying Shea until the end of the festivities.

The charity for whom I will be taking pledges and asking for your donations to is going to be the Light Up The World Foundation. LUTW is an international humanitarian organization affiliated with the University of Calgary in Canada that is dedicated to illuminating the lives of the world’s poor. It is the first humanitarian organization to utilize LED lighting technologies to bring affordable, safe, healthy, efficient, and environmentally responsible lighting to people currently without access to proper lighting.

Almost two billion people – that’s one of every three of our planetary neighbours – still do not have access to electricity. For them, nightfall means darkness, and if there is any light at all, it is by fire only. Burning wood or dung, kerosene lanterns, candles and so on, which pollutes the air in their homes and demands time and money spent getting fuel that they can ill-afford.

LUTW utilizes LED illumination powered by pedal-cranked microgenerator, wind turbine or solar panel to provide safe yet affordable lighting solutions to ecologically sensitive and remote rural villages the world over.

I invite you, the fine readers of UnpluggedLiving, to make a pledge in support of my Blogathon efforts. Please feel free to make a public pledge here in the comments or email me privately (here) with your vow of support. Shea’s Blogathon rules dictate that I must make 2 posts per hour, which would come out to 24 for my shift, but I think I’ll aim for 25 posts just to make it even. I’ll have more details and reminders as the date draws near.

For more info on the Blogathon, check out Shea’s posts here and here and for more info on the Light Up The World Foundation, see their website here.
