Heading off to college usually means a bunch of new college and dorm gear is in order – at least in the minds of many consumers. However, do you really need all that stuff that typical college packing lists tell you to bring? Probably not. “Don’t buy so much stuff” is tip number one on the green college packing list offered by St. Lawrence University, in Canton, New York. This greener list is the perfect alternative for college kids looking to head to college with a smaller footprint.

Some of the excellent green packing and green living tips offered by St. Lawrence University include:
- Look for “Energy Star”-logo TVs, DVD players, computers and microwaves.
- Most residence halls have common area TVs, refrigerators and other appliances so consider not bringing any at all.
- Computers, gaming systems, stereos, TVs, cell phones, cameras and iPod chargers that draw electricity even when turned off. Unplug them when not in use.
- Flip off the light switch.
- Buy only compact fluorescent light bulbs, which use 75 percent less energy and last 10 times longer than standard incandescent light bulbs.
- A bike comes in handy around campus and for town use. (St. Lawrence’s library lends bikes out, just like books).
- Bring your own reusable mug/coffee cup.
- Bring reusable bags to carry books, groceries and other items you buy.
- Look for toxic free and organic sheets, rugs and curtains – or other natural fiber products such as those made with hemp or bamboo.
