Jeff at sustainablog points out today’s Guardian in the UK which features an overview of the funding programs that are available to schools in Great Britian for the installation of renewable energy systems. In addition to the list of schemes available, the Guardian also provides a page detailing some of the schools that have already participated. From the piece…
Government grants and charitable and private investment has helped schools install a range of sustainable technology in the past few years. Wind turbines, solar panels and heat pumps are making schools more environmentally friendly, pupils are learning more and schools are saving money on their electricity bills.
As Jeff notes, and I completely agree with, having actual solar panels and wind turbines working away can provide a much more worthwhile learning experience to today’s youth than dry lectures in the classroom. The sooner we can get more of the next generations hooked on how cool and how much saner renewable tech is, the better chance they’ll have to fix the mess that they’ll find themselves in. Cynical, but true.
I just wish we could see this level of initiative here in North America.
Here’s the Guardian’s list of funding programs and here’s their profile of schools that have systems up and running.
