Green Goes With Everything Book Review

green goes with everythingLast week I got a review copy of a book called “Green Goes with Everything” by Sloan Barnett.   Sloan Barnett, is a regular contributor to NBC’s Today show and the Green Editor for KNTV.   Perhaps some of you have already seen her on TV.

Anyway,  I got the book, and skimmed through it (just like what I normally do to every book) to find out what is it all about.    Then I proceed doing deep reading to really get into the meat of the book.

The book’s topic is quite interesting as she talks about being green inside the house and the dangers of everyday products typically found in our house like cleaners, hair spray, polishers,  and even beauty products.

Here are some interesting facts I found out in the book

1.  There might be more toxic substances in your house than outside

2.  At least 6 well defined epidemiological studies found that there’s a strong link between the use of certain cleaning products and asthma.

3. Did you know that “1 of every 30 products sold in the United States fails to meed one or more of the standards set by the industry itself or by the government”?

4. Nearly 400 products sold in the US contains chemicals prohibited for use in cosmetics in other countries.

5.  Did you know that your non-stick cookware may contain measurable levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) which EPA identified as “likely” to cause cancer?

There’s a lot more of these valuable information in the book.  A lot of it is  about potential hazards lurking in our homes.   I’m not yet finished reading the book but as of now, I can truly say that this book is a must read.

I don’t think the book is just for the health conscious, nor the “green” fanatics  but rather this is a book for everybody who values life, who doesn’t want to get sick, and for those people who really want to have a “clean” non-toxic environment.   Special mention to parents or anybody who has kids around the house,  this is a must read…or better yet,  an “urgent read”.

Oh, and for the budget conscious, the book also contains some simple recipes on how to create your own “green” cleaning products such as floor cleaners, window cleaner , and stain lifter.    Kill 2 birds in one stone.  Live green and save money too.

I think for a lot of people who read, and will read this book,  you would consider it as a “wake up call”.   I know even before that there are some substances in our homes that can be harmful for us but I did not really know much about them, and how common it is until I read this book.

That is kinda scary. Every pan sold these days is non-stick… I’ll have to get the book and see what else I can green up at home. Thanks for the heads up.

Fortunately I switched back to stainless steel pans. About 2 months ago, I retired my non-stick cookware because some parts of the non-stick coatings have already chipped off. I was afraid that we might have eaten parts of it. This was even before I read the book.
