Green smoothies take over the world

IMG 6943OK, so I finally got around to trying out this green smoothie thing. That is, I tried incorporating some leafy greens into some smoothies. First it was baby spinach leaves, which I blended with a banana, frozen strawberries, and water. The result was OK, completely drinkable, but I didn’t feel like the flavor was enhanced by the addition of the spinach. I would have enjoyed the spinach more if it had been lightly steamed and served as a side dish. But then again, I love spinach. I just don’t want my fruit to taste like it.

My second green smoothie attempt was with butter lettuce (with the same banana, strawberry, and water combo). The results were completely different this time. The flavor was definitely noticeable, but not easily identifiable. I thought it was fine the first time I had one, but not too exciting. So I was surprised when, the next day, I actually craved a lettuce-flavored smoothie. I seem to like them more each time I try them.

While I found the lettuce smoothies to be surprisingly pleasant, I’m not sure how often I’ll actually drink them. The greens were a bit of a challenge for my feeble blender, which is on its last legs. But I do appreciate having yet another way to enjoy getting my leafy greens.

Have you ever tried a green smoothie? What do you think?

I’ve bought a couple that include wheat grass and spirulina, among other green stuff and I’ve enjoyed them. They have a sweet taste to them because they’re made with a lot of apple juice.

Kale is a good choice for a smoothie. It blends up really creamy and adds less flavor than other dark greens. Plus, according to Victoria Boutenko (credited with inventing the green smoothie), 1 lb. of Kale has an entire day’s worth of complete protein.

  3. Green Smoothies Rock! I love adding lots of cinnamon to mine – YUM!!!

I’ve still never tried wheat grass. I think its reputation for tasting icky scares me off. :)

I wouldn’t have thought kale would be a great smoothie ingredient, but now I’ll have to try it!

And mmmmm cinnamon! It’s one of my favorite smoothie ingredients.
