Grooming for Alzheimer’s Patients

“Why bother getting your mother’s hair permed or set regularly?” I was asked. “She won’t know the difference.”
“But I will,” I thought. “And the nurses and aides will.”
I liked to see Mother well groomed, dressed in attractive colors, with her hair neatly coiffed. I’d tell her how pretty she looked and she’d smile. The staff also remarked on her hair or her dress…and she’d smile.
This is not to say any of us would have neglected her if she wasn’t groomed and dressed this way. But it’s much easier to create a happier and more pleasant atmosphere when colors are cheerful and loveliness abounds.
So…don’t feel it’s a waste to fix your family member’s hair, paint her nails, and provide attractive clothing. Some may not stay well groomed for long. But we can start the day with beauty.
