Grow A Moonlight Garden

I’ve only seen a couple moonlight gardens but they’re amazing when done right. How a moonlight garden works is you sow plants and flowers that will take on a glowing, shimmery, or even fluorescent quality by the light of the moon.

Here are some tips:
- Choose colors that will glow in the moonlight – blue, violet, white, light pink, and light gray/silvery plants and flowers will all appear brighter under the moonlight.
- Add some water such as in a birdbath or small pond for cool reflections.
- Use white accents such as white stones, rocks, light brick, white statues and other ornaments, or shiny hanging objects to intensify the effect.
- Look for plants and flowers that come alive at night – some close up at night, making them a poor choice for a good display.
- Keep real light to a minimum. Some solar powered muted lanterns or other soft lighting can be used, but too much light and your garden won’t glow.
- Mix in other plants to a lesser degree for a good daytime garden as well. So long as the bulk of your plants are good for a moonlight garden, you’ll be fine.
Good moonlight garden plant choices:
- Silver pear tree
- Lavender
- Sweet rocket
- White Oleander
- Forget-me-nots
- Various species of thyme
- Yucca
- Evening primrose
- Alyssum – white
- Cherry tree
- White, or bicolor Lilies
- Rosemary
- Hibiscus
- Gardenia
- Light colored roses
- Sweet cicely
Really your choices are endless though. There are any number of white and light flowers and plants that will grow well in your region.
