Growing Together – Church Guide to Marriage

Recently the Church of England released a new publication titled Growing Together. It’s a short book (and course, I think) designed to help new couples along with new marriage.
The whole idea has me thinking about premarital counseling. Did you have any counseling before you got married? It’s pretty standard around these parts if you want a church wedding, particularly in an evangelical church. Kerri and I were more than willing to go through the sessions with our pastor. We got married in the church we were attending. Our only disappointment was that the pastor we had asked to perform our ceremony and who was leading our counseling moved away partway through. The pastor who stepping in was fine; he just wasn’t our first choice.
I’ll talk about our experiences in premarital counseling another time. For now, what do you think about it? Did you go through premarital counseling? Do you think some sort of counseling should be required?
I don’ t know if it should be required, but maybe encouraged more than it is. Sure are a lot of people who seem to not know what they’re getting into.

Thanks for commenting. Today it occurs to me: Given how much rhetoric there is about how marriage is essential in the overall health of a society, it is remarkably easy to get married.
