Guatemalan Independence Day
As with most countries, Independence is a reason to celebrate. And, of course, Guatemalans know how to do it in style. September 15 commemorates the Declaration of Independence from Central America in 1821.
The largest holiday celebration is in Quetzaltenango.
The Spanish began arriving in 1518 and overtook Native populations, conquering land and food. Similar to the US Colonial period, Guatemala was considered a capital of Spain.
On September 15, 1821, the Captaincy-general of Guatemala proclaimed its independence and worked with the Mexican Empire, which had formed two years prior. They formed the United Provinces of Central America but dissolved in civil war in 1838-1840.
