Last week, it finally happened: a man on an elevator asked, “So, when are you due?”

I knew it was just a matter of time. I’m 16 weeks along, and for the last couple of weeks I’ve been getting a lot of those “wow her belly looks kinda big but no way am I gonna ask if she’s pregnant” looks. Finally, I seem to have broken through the barricade to the point where brave (or foolish) souls will not only assume I’m probably pregnant, but actually ask.

I admitted that he was the first person who’d asked, and actually stumbled around for a minute trying to remember how to answer his question. When am I due, again? Finally I remembered. “March.”

“First baby?” he asked with just a flicker of a patronizing smile on his face.

“No, uh…fifth.” I said.

“Fifth! Oh. Fifth. Well, then. Fifth.”
