H5N1 virus found in dead bird; Hongkong on alert

An indemic bird found dead in a local shopping district in Hongkong tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus, prompting agriculture officials to step up inspections around the area.

The scaly-breasted munia is a local bird and ffficials suspect that it may have been infected by migratory birds. So far, only one bird has tested positive out of six birds found dead December 31st.

The department of agriculture is also reminding the public to avoid personal contacts with wild birds and live poultry on top of observing proper hygiene.
