Halle Berry’s Diabetic Ignorance

November 11, 2008 by Cherie Burbach

Halle Berry caused all kinds of hoopla not too long ago when she stated that she had “weaned herself off” of insulin. She said she had Type 1 diabetes and now had Type 2 diabetes.

Well, we know that you cannot change the type of diabetes you have. Obviously Halle was misdiagnosed originally. If she’s living without insulin, quite simply she is Type 2.

Here’s the interview she did with James Lipton from Inside the Actor’s Studio when she revealed this:

While I think it’s great when celebrities come forward to talk about diabetes (as Nick Jonas did recently), it can also be a negative thing if the celebrity is misinformed about the disease.

Hopefully Halle realizes her mistake and now corrects this information in interviews.

weaned off of insulin..Ha. I get really annoyed with celebrities throwing their opinions and ideas around unless it’s for a good cause.

I would like to learn more about athletes with diabetes, like Jay Cutler the starting QB for the Denver Broncos. That’s more interesting to me than a celebrity talking about something she has no clue about.

  2. Tony: Yeah, don’t you just love that? I just cringed when I saw this video. This is how people get such poor misconceptions about diabetes.

The scary thing is, she has this serious disease and obviously doesn’t know a thing about it!

I wonder if they (celebrities) realize just how much of an impact what they say can make, especially on young adults/teenagers. It could give someone the misconception that they too can “beat” diabetes and will eventually wean off of insulin.

If I was Halle, I would have a personal endo going everywhere with me and constantly putting a meter in font of me to check my glucose. The personal chef wouldn’t hurt either… ;)

  4. No kidding. You have to wonder what kind of control she has if she knows this little about it.

I think if a celeb knows what they are talking about, they can really bring some positive attention to diabetes. But this wasn’t positive attention at all!
