Handy Upstairs Balcony Gardening Tips

Before you plant a garden on your apartment, condo, or upstairs room balcony, you need to do some planning.

Check out the patio: Get specs on how much weight your balcony can hold. If you rent, make sure it’s ok with the landlord before you plant.
Watch the sun: Even if you live in a super sunny area, there may be places on your balcony that the sun never or rarely reaches. Plan for shade loving plants in less sunny balcony areas. You may also need to move plants around so they get the sun they need, if so, plan on a planter with wheels OR plant in smaller containers.
Investigate the railings: If your railing is strong enough, you could place some planters on them. However, never place pots on a balcony rail, even a wide one, if it falls it could hurt someone. Always make sure planters are securely attached.
Use light soil: Because you’ll want lightweight containers as to not weigh down railings, and for moving ease, use a soilless plating mix when possible.
Create a small workstation: If possible, set up a small table on your balcony. If you have the room it’s helpful as opposed to carrying items in and out of your house. Use waterproof containers to hold your gardening gear.
Be a good neighbor: Your downstairs neighbors DO NOT want water and dirt dripping down on them. Don’t be lame like that (yes, I’ve been there – I had the bad upstairs neighbor). Make sure you place drip trays under all planters and be careful when watering or transferring plants. You might want to consider placing a mat under your workspace table.
Plan for wind: Wind can swoop across upper balconies, slamming plants over and making a mess. Place rocks in your drain trays or attach planters to the balcony or a solid stand.
