Have you ever eaten genetically modified food?
Earlier this month, the Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology released the results of their annual survey on consumer attitudes towards genetically modified (GM) foods and biotechnology in general. Some of the results:
- 34% of Americans believe GM foods are safe
- 29% say they are unsafe
- 26% of American believe they have eaten GM foods in 2006
- 60% believe they have not eaten GM foods
- 14% don’t know if they’ve eaten GM foods this past year

Genetically modified foods have been with us for the last ten years. If you live in the U.S. you have certainly eaten genetically modified foods. If you live in a developing country, you have certainly eaten genetically modified foods from the U.S. The U.S. is certainly the largest donor of food aid. Since most of the crops grown in the U.S. are genetically modified, it goes without saying that GM food is what Uncle Sam gives to poor countries.
And if you’re in Europe, you have also eaten genetically modified foods because you drink milk from a cow that has been fed on genetically modified animal food.
My guess, then, is everybody has eaten genetically modified foods. Whoever wants to suggest otherwise must be lying.
James: Thanks for the detailed comment! GM food is here to stay whether people want it to or not.
