Heart Healthy Corazonas vs. Doritos Tortilla Chips

Corazonas Snacks, Salsa Picante, 2-Ounce Bags (Pack of 24)At a week-long camp I attended when I was in fourth grade, we were allowed visits to the convenience store on a daily basis. My favorite snack back then was Doritos and I had more than my share of it that week. I believe I scarfed down a 7 oz. bag every other day and got a mouth ulcer to show for it.

My love affair with Doritos ended but I may soon start a new one with Corazonas. I wrote about the functional food chips earlier and their Director of Communications, Erin Markey, was kind enough to send me some samples. I had the Salsa Picante flavor with my Italian deli sandwich for lunch today and it was a nice tangy, slightly sweet, and crunchy complement. What I liked most was that it was far less salty and overwhelming than Doritos. Maybe because of the oats they use to make the chips, the tortilla chips are also sturdier but that made them a little more satisfying for me so I didn’t feel the desire to eat more (although perhaps Erin would have liked me to!).

Trouble is, Corazonas tortilla chips still have the same amount of calories as Doritos Nacho Cheese flavor. Each 2 oz. serving has 140 calories with 60 coming from fat (Doritos has 70 calories coming from fat). Corazonas, however, has only 0.5 g of saturated fat compared to Doritos’ 1.5 g. Not to mention that Corazonas has whole oats and plant sterols which have been shown to lower LDL cholesterol. And Corazonas has 3 g of fiber per 2 oz serving compared to 1 g for Doritos.

I am no longer that nine-year-old girl indulging her Doritos craving but I can still have snacks if I choose wisely. Wonder what Ruth of our new b5media sister blog Eating Fabulous would think of Corazonas.
