Some women who’ve never experienced heartburn before will feel its effects during pregnancy. While avoiding certain foods helps reduce acid reflux, some women will still need relief with medications. After all, there’s a lot of pressure on your stomach during pregnancy.
For women who choose to take H2 blockers for acid reflux during pregnancy, there’s good news.
The results of a recent large study, published in the Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, revealed that H2 blockers taken during pregnancy pose no significant threat to the fetus. H2 blockers include Famotidine (Pepcid), Cimetidine (Tagamet) and Ranitidine (Zantac).
The rate of major congenital malformations in the group that took H2 blockers during the first trimester of pregnancy was only 5.7%, compared with 5.3% in the group of women who didn’t take H2 blockers during their first trimester. Another study, conducted in 2005, found no increased risk of major malformations after the use of H2 blockers during pregnancy.
