Heh

We’ve been taking my father and his wheelchair (temporary situation because of a back injury, if you’re just joining in) to my 10 year old son’s football games on Saturday mornings.

He really enjoys going, and, he seems to be a bit of a good luck charm for the team as they have (coincidentally) started playing better since he’s been going. He’s coached sports of various sorts for a lot of his life, so he knows the details of the game, and, with the proper perspective in mind, approaches games expecting his team to win. He can also be pretty straightforward when he wants to be.

The coach is a good friend of mine, so he knows that my dad has been there, and, though they’ve chatted, they don’t know each other extremely well. Last Saturday’s game was a tough loss, and, mistakes were made. That afternoon, I took my father to Mass and we happened to see the football coach (my friend) on the way in. I was pushing the wheelchair and I was vaguely aware of the coach enthusiastically greeting my father and my father responded.

It wasn’t until days later that I found out my father had said (in Mass, mind you), “You guys gave away that game.”

My friend, the coach, respectfully took it as it was meant from an “Old School” coach giving advice (my father never would have said it to someone he didn’t like or who couldn’t take it, it meant that the coach was “in” with him), but, I was mortified!!

It is a man thing. Just trust me on that one. “You stink” (or other not so nice phrase) is a sign of disrespect. “You gave that game away” Respectful in your abilities, but mistakes were made. Simple (in a man’s world kind of way).

Not so conincidentally… my wife does NOT allow me to attend any of our daughter’s soccer games.
