Most women have suffered through at least one bout of horribly uncomfortable yeast infections. Luckily, for most of us, treatment gets rid of it. However, many postmenopausal women suffer from something called vaginitis or atrophic vaginitis and the irritation, itching and pain can become unbearable.
The North American Menopause Society held it’s annual meeting this past week and one of the studies presented was on the use of conjugated estrogen cream to relieve the discomfort of vaginitis. According to study findings, many women with moderate to severe atrophic vaginitis found relief from using one of two low-dose estrogen creams. The relief was particularly noticeable after 12 weeks of use and was still present when the women were evaluated again at one year after the study began.
According to the researchers, as many as 40% of postmenopausal women are affected by atrophic vaginitis.
