Heroes wanted! (Miley Cyrus and Jamie Lynn Spears need not apply)

It’s tough being a ‘tween girl (approximately ages 8-12), that’s for sure.
I have the privilege of teaching plenty of them, and it’s clear to me that they need someone – a hero, if you will – to inspire them.
Unfortunately, today’s ‘tween gals have Miley, Jamie Lynn, and whoever else comes loping along with a bit of talent and a fabulous publicist or already-famous family member.
I know, I know – it’s tough to be Miley and Jamie Lynn. And I honestly applaud Miley for getting out of the whole Hannah Montana business (she recently announced this would be her last season) and Jamie for owning up to her mistakes and embracing her baby. However, I just want someone to become a role model, not fodder for the tabloids every day of the week.
I guess I want a female version of Harry Potter to appear, a girl who’s smart – nay, brilliant, assertive, fun, creative, geeky (in a cool sort of way), interesting…
Alas, there’s no “Harriet” Potter out there that I can think of this morning.
But I hope that someday there is.
