Hidden Epidemics

February 7, 2007 by Kristina Chew, PhD

Autism…… as an MSNBC series on “the hidden epidemic?” trumpeted almost two years ago?

Heart disease, as a February 14th PBS show announces? (Thanks to my friend Hsien-Hsien at A Hearty Life for the tip……I also saw the poster at our local YMCA).

A few other candidates for the title of “hidden epidemic”: sexually transmitted diseases (also see here on HIV/AIDS in Asia); depression; celiac disease; violence; concussion in rugby.

    Stupidity??? :)

    No, that’s plainly evident.

  2. Club 166 says:

    Umm, just to clarify.

It’s the stupidity of people seeing epidemics everywhere I was referring to.

  3. Jez Rourke says:

Female celebrities with live small dogs in their purses has clearly reached epidemic proportions. It must be stopped.

  4. Julia says:

I agree with Jez — I’ve heard horror stories from someone who works with some of them.

  5. Charlie has come within a few inches of one of those bag-dogs on the subway—he didn’t notice the dog (because the bag was so big, and the dog so small), which was a good thing since the sight of a dog right now makes him quite upset.
