We’ve talked about degrees here before, and for good reason. Thinking has changed about careers and college in the last few years. It isn’t that college is a bad idea, it’s just that there are lots of options for people these days when it comes to careers. Some careers don’t require a degree, and some require technical schooling as opposed to traditional four-year schooling.
That isn’t to say that people should ever stop learning. Regardless if a job requires a degree or not, one thing is for sure, the need to update your skills is a constant whether you work in the field or in an office. There’s an article that lists “20 Big Salary Jobs That Don’t Need a Degree”, and there was an interesting quote:
“Though schooling is a great way to develop skills and will no doubt enhance your credibility, a college education is no longer a requirement to securing a well-paying salary.”
In this changing job market, nothing is guaranteed. As author Stephen Viscusi has pointed out to us, it isn’t enough just to come in every day and mindlessly do your job. There are an increasing number of careers that don’t require a degree, but that doesn’t mean you can be laid back about your job. Jobs that don’t require degree aren’t the second best or the fall back choice. They are as competitive as any other career choice. The point is, you’ve got a lot of career options these days. You can take several different paths in order to get to the career you desire. Once you get there however, you’ve got to make yourself the best employee possible. That includes educating yourself (with training, college, tech school, or workshops), being valuable, and being likable.
